Overview
In 2021, N4D supported Building Foundation for Development (BFD) to develop their multi-sectoral nutrition strategy and capacities to contribute to more sustainable solutions to malnutriton. BFD is one of the largest national NGOs in Yemen, the largest in the nutrition sector and has a leadership role for other NGOs working in nutrition.
The work with BFD led on to a request from the national Scaling up Nutrition Movement Secretariat, to support the implementation of the existing Yemen Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan (MSNAP). N4D has been supporting this process since August 2022.
We believe that the MSNAP provides a strong national framework around which actors from across sectors and the Nexus can align their investments and actions. Initiatives such as the Yemen Action Plan on Wasting, the Food Systems Pathways and the Inter-Cluster Integrated Famine Risk Reduction strategy are vital contributions to the achievement of the MSNAP goals. However, we are concerned about the inadequate investment in sectors that can help build resilience and prevent malnutrition as well as missed opportunities to support the strengthening of local coordination and implementation capacities. We believe that the SUN Yemen Steering Committees are the primary strategic mechanisms for multi-stakeholder, multi-sectoral coordination and tracking of humanitarian and development actions for nutrition. We consider that the SUN Yemen Secretariat has the capabilities and adeptness to facilitate and support these multistakeholder actions across the country.

N4D’s approach
During the support to BFD we drew on strong global evidence to inform the development of the organisation´s multisectoral nutrition strategy adapted to the specific realities in Yemen and aligned with the national Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan. In our ongoing support to the operationalisation of the MSNAP we have provided technical advice to the SUN Yemen Secretariat, been proactive in raising the awareness of humanitarian and development partners about the MSNAP and the role of the SUN Yemen Secretariat and advocated for increased alignment of humanitarian and development investments with national priorities. We supported the drafting of the Yemen Call to Action on Nutrition and its endorsement by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen. Over the coming months, we will continue to support SUN Yemen processes which bring together stakeholders from across sectors to accelerate progress in scaling up more coherent, effective and sustainable actions across the Nexus.
